‘Sex Work Is Work’: Activists Observe Sex Workers’ Rights Day In Kolkata

March 3, has been named by sex worker rights activists as a day to recognise sex worker rights as human rights. With banners saying, “sex work is work”, the activists demanded inclusion, dignity and protection of their occupational and human rights. Here are the glimpses from the rally organised in Kolkata:

The rally was organised by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee which is a is a collective of more than 65,000 sex workers and functions as forum for men, women and transgender sex workers in West Bengal.

Through the rally, the activists raised slogans demanding respect and dignity towards sex workers. The activists say they want recognition of sex work as an occupation.

Sex Workers’ Rights Day was first observed in Kolkata in 2001 when over 25,000 sex workers gathered and to protect their occupational and human rights. The rally was made possible despite lobbying by many opposition activists, who tried to revoke their permit.

Since then, many sex worker groups worldwide started observing March 3 every year as International Sex Workers’ Rights Day.
