5-Year-Old Bride, 8-Year-Old-Groom. Child Marriage Stopped Near Hyderabad

The five-year-old girl was rescued by the efforts of Childline.

Vikarabad, Telangana: In Mambapur village of Vikarabad, 60 km from Hyderabad, a 5-year-old girl was prevented from falling prey to a tribal tradition and becoming a child bride on Tuesday morning.

When the Childline rescue team arrived on the spot, they found out that a tent had been put up at the venue and two goats were tied there, indicating plans of a celebratory meal later.

“The girl was not decked up in finery when we arrived, but was wearing bangles,” said Childline officials, who took her to a government-run home in Hyderabad.

“The girl’s family are tribal migrants from Degulamaari village, Chincholi, in Karnataka,” Venkata Srinu, investigating officer of a local police station told NDTV.

According to a custom in their community, bereavement should be followed by a celebration. Till then, the relatives will neither talk to the bereaved family members or come to their house.

The girl’s mother said that since she had lost her mother a few days ago, her daughter’s marriage was necessary so that the relatives can mingle again.

It was thus decided that her daughter would be married off to an eight-year-old boy from their community.

“The parents have been sent for counselling. No case will be booked since no marriage has been performed,” the police told NDTV.
