Nellore, Andhra Pradesh: A pregnant woman in Andhra Pradesh’s Nellore is recovering from burn injuries after an acid attack by her in-laws. The attack on Girija came last month after an astrologer reportedly assured her mother-in-law that she was carrying a girl.
S Girija, 27, already has a one-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
The police said that after the astrologer’s prediction last month, her mother-in-law and sister-in-law had decided to kill her and eventually threw acid on her stomach on August 19. She sustained 30 per cent burns and is yet to heal.
The woman was rescued by her neighbours, who took her to the hospital.
It is not yet known what kind of acid was used to target her. Tests are on to establish it. The open sale of acid has been banned by an order of the Supreme Court in July 2013, but rampant violation happens across the country.
The doctor who treated her alerted the police. The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the in-laws.
Girija’s husband and father-in-law have been arrested. A senior police officer told NDTV, “We are waiting for chemical analysis report. It appears that they mixed a chemical in kerosene and poured it over her. We are on a look-out for Girija’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law.”
Police say that a property dispute between Girija’s family and her in-laws could have triggered the attack and they are investigating on that front as well.
In Nellore, 939 girls are born for every 1,000 boys – much below the normal ratio at birth.
