New Delhi: For contribution towards women empowerment and educating girls, 10 districts were felicitated at an event in Delhi to celebrate the National Girl Child Day on Tuesday. The theme of the event was “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao“.
The districts were recognised for enabling girl child education, effective community engagement, enforcement of Pre-Conception And Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act.
The awarded districts were Cuddalore (Tamil Nadu), Jalgaon, Osmanabad (Maharashtra), Raigarh (Chhattisgarh), Kathua (Jammu and Kashmir), Yamunanagar (Haryana), Jhunjhunu (Rajasthan), North Sikkim (Sikkim), Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh) and Mansa (Punjab).
Jhunjhunu and Kathua were identified as districts with adverse child sex ratio in Census 2011. The districts were awarded for “effective community engagement” and for working towards “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” campaign.
Activities to educate the masses; awareness drives, signature campaigns, mass media campaigns, nukkad natak, rallies, debates were held in the districts to engage people and make them understand the value of girls and discourage usage of diagnostic tools for sex selection.
In Kathua, local folk artists with Dogri and Urdu as primary medium of communication were given the responsibilities to connect with the masses. Sponsorship programmes, symposiums and debates were also held in schools and colleges to sensitize various sections of the society.
Likewise, special programmes were run in all the awarded districts to eliminate gender bias and work towards welfare of women.
Rio Paralympics silver medallist Deepa Malik; first female amputee to climb Mount Everest Arunima Sinha; advisor of Balaknama newspaper Shanno and one of the first women fighter pilots Avani Chaturvedi spoke at the event and shared inspiring personal stories.
Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi and Secretary, Women and Child Development Ministry Leena Nair were also present at the occasion.
