- Chandra Prakash has blood cancer, needs a bone marrow transplant
- Doctors have found a donor for him but his parents can't afford the surgery
- A bone marrow transplant would cost Rs. 20 lakh
MADURAI: Chandra Prakash dreams of being an engineer. But the 14-year-old boy is suffering from blood cancer and spends more time in the hospital than a classroom. His life can be saved, doctors say, but his parents can’t afford the treatment.
The cancer was initially controlled with medication. But Chandra’s condition has worsened in the last two years. What he requires now is a bone marrow transplant, a match for which is difficult to find outside of the family. But in Chandra’s case, doctors have found a donor. But unfortunately his parents can’t afford the surgery.
“Luckily we have an unrelated match. But the bone marrow transplant would cost Rs 20 lakh and the family is poor,” said Dr T Kasi Viswanathan, who heads the department of hematology and bone marrow transplantation at Meenakshi Misison Hospital in Madurai.
Chandra’s father is a truck driver and his mother a housewife in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district. The parents have sold everything they had to save their son. But they need more help to raise the required money.
“If you help us, my son would be with us for some more time.” said Chandra’s mother G Chitra.
Doctors in Madurai say unrelated stem cell transplants have a seventy per cent success rate. The parents are now seeking help.
