JAIPUR: Inspired by the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a tribal man sold off his goat and mortgaged the ornaments of his wife to complete the work on a toilet he was building at his house in Rajasthan’s Dungarpur district.

A daily wager, Kanti Lal Rot, lives with his mother, wife, children and widow of his brother, in a thatched house along Dungarpur-Ratanpur road. He was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Clean India Mission after he was informed about the campaign by local activists.

The activists had convinced him to construct a toilet in his house. He was told that the Centre, the state government and the municipality will each pay him Rs 4,000 if he built a toilet in his house.

“He started digging all by himself and built a structure with the help of some labourers after he got the first installment,” said K K Gupta, Vice Chairman of Muncipality Dungarpur. The first tranche that he received was spent in construction work.

But then the trouble started. The money was spent and the work was in danger of stopping mid-way. That was when Mr Rot decided to carry on with his own funds.

“He sold one of his five goats for Rs 5,000 and mortgaged the silver ornaments of his wife and made the payment,” said Mr Gupta.

The official visited Mr Rot’s family today after he came to know that Mr Rot was funding the toilet on his own. He gave him another Rs 4,000 to redeem the mortgaged ornaments and felicitated him.

The government is on a mission under PM Modi’s Clean India campaign to build toilets at every home in rural areas. Open defecation contributes much to the poor level of health and hygiene in the rural areas.
